[ Autograph ] Mary Todd Lincoln 1818 -1882 First Lady, wife of Abraham Lincoln. Mary Lincoln's life was beset with personal torment;following the death of her youngest son Tad and the assassination of her husband Mrs. Lincoln's mental health deteriorated to the point where she required committal to a mental institution and spent the rest of her life in seclusion. Rare A.D.S. "Mrs. Lincoln" as First Lady on (inverted) Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, Feb. 23,1865 Less than two months before the murder of her husband, Mrs. Lincoln writes, in full: "Mrs. Cuthbert Metropolitan Hotel, New York Return home. Mrs. Lincoln' The "Mrs. Cuthbert' referred to may have been the wife of James H. Cuthbert, a clergyman who at the time was preaching in Augusta, Georgia and who would become pastor of Washington's First Baptist Church in 1869 Chip at lower left affecting printed letterhead, file hole at upper right, with a very lightly toned vertical fold and light soiling.
