[ Autograph ] (John Quincy Adams) Interesting autograph manuscript, 9pp. sm. folio, ca. 1840, a copy of a love poem in an unknown hand purportedly written by a lovesick Adams to Elizabeth William Weld. The poem is titled "A Vision", and the neatly-written text reads in part: ''..By day thy beauties are my darling theme, By night thy image sweetens many a dream; On thee thy ardent Lovers fate depends, From thee the evil or the boon descends, Thy choice alone can make myanxious breast, Extremely wretched, or supremely blest...' According to the family provenance accompanying this item, Adams twice proposedto Elizabeth, only to be turned down. An interesting piece of Americana. Very good.
