Description:

[ Autograph ] John Adams 1735-1826 Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. he later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. A fine framed ensemble of two items, the first being a partial D.S. "John Adams' as President, 8.5in x 10in, a portion of a four-language ship's paper, this part being the Dutch translation and part of the English text, boldly signed by Adams and Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. In the same frame is the upper part of an A.L.S. (unsigned), 8in x 7in, Quincy, May 5, 1813 Adams prefaces his letter of recommendation with a statement: '...I ought to make an Apology to you for the trouble I give you to read so many of my letters upon subjects with which perhaps, I should have nothingto do...' Adams then pens a glowing recommendation for one Andrew Eliot, with whose father and grandfather Adams was acquainted, adding knew them to be beamed, ingenious, virtuous and pious clergymen...' The bottom of the letter, with signature was removed and is not present. Beautifully matted with an engraving and brass biographical plaque, all encased in a handsome frame.
