[ Autograph ] James K. Polk 1795-1849 Eleventh President of the United States who led the country during the Mexican American War, and secured the territories of Oregon and Washington. A.L.S. "James K Polk" lp. 4to., Washington, Feb. 9, 1831 to Secretary of the Navy John Branch. Polk writes a letter of recommendation for Edward Dunn, an employee of the House of Representatives, seeking a position as a purser in the Navy. he adds: '...If the Secretary of the Navy, who has a personal knowledge of him, considers him qualified, his appointment would be very acceptable..." Folds, otherwise fine condition.
