Description:

[ Autograph ] James Buchanan 1791-1868 Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [London], June 6, 1854 to Lady Stafford. In part: '...There is a Consul of the Us. in London, George N. Sanders, who, I have no doubt, will be happyto attend to the business I shall cheerfully send the paper when authenticated in the despatch bag to Washington. I wrote to Judge Mason...' Light margin toning, otherwise very good. Professionally matted and framed with an original white campaign silk, 1.5in x 7in, showing an oval portrait of Buchanan in the center, with the candidates' names "Buchanan And Berckinridge" boldly printed above and below the portrait. A fine ensemble for display
