Garfield Good content early A.L.S. lp. 8vo., Washington, June 16, 1865 With the Civil War having ended only weeks earlier, Garfieid writes Sargeant Nathan Newhall concerning gross irregularities in army recruitment. In part: '..[Your letter] in regard to enlistments for unexpired terms of regiments was received in which you mention that prisoners were discharged from Forest Hall Prison on condition of enlisting. Will you please inform me the name of the Keeper of the prison, the name of the person who published theorder - the regiments into which such convicts enlisted, and any other details you may be cognizant of ..
