[ Autograph ] James A. Garfield Fine content A.L.S. "J. A. Garfield", 2pp. 4to., Washington, July 9, 1866 to C. A. B. Pratt. While fighting for re-election to Congress, Garfield assesses his support and his adversaries. In part: "...Mr. Hutchins and his friends are busy misrepresenting me and scattering secret circulars through the district to injure me. All I ask is a fair expression of the sentiments of the people of the district. Unless such a fair expression chooses me, I don't want the office. I must stay here at mypost and must reply upon my friends to see that no unfair advantage istaken of my absence I should suppose that a large majority of the district are in my favor, but there in no knowing how much may be doneby wise working in the township primary meetings...' some soiling on second page, otherwise very good. Fine political content!
