[ Autograph ] Henry W. Longfellow (1807 -1882 American poet and author whose works include The Song of Hiawatha, The Psalm of Life and Paul Revere's Ride. An absolutely superb, unique Longfellow item,a sketch by Longfellow of a huge chestnut tree with a blacksmith's shed, plow and wagon beneath it, and a few other trees in the distance. Beneath the sketch Longfellow writes and initials the opening two lines of his most famous poem: "Under a spreading chestnut tree The village smithy stands H.W.L. 1880'. Sketch and textare in brown-black ink on an octavo sheet, with some light soiling inmargin areas. One of the best Longfellow items we have offered!
