Description:

[ Autograph ] Gerald R. Ford Fine content T.L.S. "Jerry Ford" on House Minority Leader letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, July 9, 1969to a constituent. Ford writes a strong letter of support for Nixon's policies, mentioning the appointment of Warren Burger and saying thatthe President and Attorney General Mitchell are dedicated to law and order. In part: '...I have endorsed the President's position The Congress and every committee in both the House and Senate is controlled by the Democratic majority. The [Social Security] Committee refuses to take up legislation; there is nothing which the President or any Republican member of the House can do Justice Burgeris the kind of man we can trust he believes in strict construction ofthe Constitution I think your comments on disorders and riots are especially pertinent. It is indeed regrettable when any citizens cannot walk the streets of any city without fear of attack President Nixon and Attorney General Mitchell are dedicated to a policy of law and order much more effective and dedicated than that of the previousadministration..." Interesting to note that their "law and order" policies failed to influence the President and Attorney General; bothwould resign their offices over their involvement in the Watergate break-in and cover up. Fine.
