Description:

[ Autograph ] Eleanor Roosevelt 1884-1962 First Lady, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Eleanor was active in a wide range of liberal and humanitarian projects. Exceptional political content T.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Hyde Park, New York, Jan. 5, 1948 to a Mr. Hart. Mrs. Roosevelt offers her insight into foreign policy, specifically concerning America's Russian policy. In part: I have never been interested in the 'get tough' with the Russian policy. I have always thought it a mistake They have a large enough area to develop if they are willing to work on an international level they can have common agreement for access to all the seas Russia is interested in spreading Communism because she feels it will give her greater power it would have been better if we could have remained theintermediary between Russia and Great Britain and kept her friendship Unfortunately, it would have required someone as strong as Stalin and that is not east to lind if [England] hadn't stood out against Germany when Russia was playing her own game we would have been in a much worse situation [Russia] has very little regard for individual lives so she wasted human beings when she had no material without aidshe received from us she would not have been able to save herself If it were not for the work of American communists you would find a very different attitude I think Russia has no respect for weakness, and I would never back down..." With recipients lightly-penciled notes, easily erased. Truly remarkable content!
