[ Autograph ] Benito Mussolini 1883-1945 Italian dictator whose fascist supporters marched on Rome, securing him power; allied with Hitler, after many military and political setbacks he was captured andexecuted at war's end by partisans. Historically important S.P. 19in x 15in b/w, a photograph of Mussolini and Cardinal Pietro Gasparri 1852-1934 Papal Secretary of State, with five other men seated at a table and in the process of signing the important Later an Treaty. Thetreaty, signed on February 11, 1929, settled the question of the relationship between the Holy See and Italy, in which the papacy accepted the loss of the Papal States and Italy recognized the Vaticanas an independent state. Boldy signed in full in bottom margin by Mussolini, also signed by Cardinal Gasparriand six other diplomats and clergymen involved in the negotiations. Inscription at top of mount partly-erased and easily removed, fine condition.
