Description:

AUTOGIRO COMPANY SEEKS TO SELL TO GERMANY, 1935
Fascinating T.L.S. on the letterhead of the Cierva Autogiro Company, 3pp. 4to., London, May 31, 1935 - two and a half months after Hitler ordered German rearmament in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. General Manager 'R. Blake' writes to 'Dipl. Ing. [Friedrich?] Alpers at the Reichsluftfahrt Ministerium in Berlin. In apparent contravention of the spirit of the Treaty of Versailles, Blake offers to sell Germany plans for the C.30 Autogiro, a three-bladed progenitor of today's helicopter. Blake writes, in part: '...We confirm we are prepared to sell Messrs. Focke Wulf the complete detailed plans and drawinmgs of the C.30 Autogiro now in production...for the sum of 3000...pounds sterling...' He further offers Focke Wulf full rights to manufacture the machine for 60,000 pounds with an agreement that the German and English firms would exchange information about design improvements. Heavily docketed by the germans, folds, else very good. The Cierva Autogiro Company was a British firm established in 1926 to develop the autogyro. The company was set up to further the designs of Juan de la Cierva, a Spanish engineer and pilot, with the financial backing of James George Weir, a Scottish industrialist and aviator. Nearly 150 C.30 Autogiros were built under license in the United Kingdom by Avro, in Germany by Focke-Wulf, and in France by Liore-et-Olivier. In Germany, Focke-Wuld would make the C.30A until 1938 for use by the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine.
