Description:

AUSTRIAN JEW IS EJECTED FROM THE GERMAN ARMY
A fascinating grouping of material surrounding the military service of Edward Haas, an Austrian soldier later forced to adopt the middle name 'Israel' and summarily expelled from the German Army and the Reichsarbeitsdienst due to his religion. The grouping includes Haas' police-issued 'Disqualification Certificate' issued by the Police Registration Office in Vienna, 1p. 8vo., July 10, 1939, 15 months after the Anschluss. The nineteen year-old 'is hereby withdrawn from service in the Wehrmacht in peace time...' A second document issued on the same day in Vienna, 1p. oblong 8vo., ejects Haas from membership in the R.A.D. in the form of issuance of a 'disqualification certificate', citing his 'ancestry'. In August, 1939 Haas was able to escape to the United States as there is a retained copy of his June 12, 1941 letter sent from his Cleveland address to the U.S. Civil Service Commission mentioning his father's shirt business in Vienna and his hope to obtain residency papers. An earlier letter from Haas dated Mar. 20, 1941 is written to the American Consul in Germany. Haas states he is able to support his father and hopes that a visa may be obtained for the man. There are two handwritten letters from Haas' father, Alfred, with censor-marked envelopes mailed from Vienna from September and October, 1941, though regrettably these are untranslated. They may refer to packages of food sent to the senior Haas, and there are hints of despair in some sections of the texts. Also present are two postcards from his uncle, Emil Gallus in Havana, likely another Jew who fled Austria and ended up in Cuba. Both are typed and signed, mailed to Edward in Cleveland in January and March, 1940. Gallus mentions he expects to come to New York in a few weeks and hopes to see his friend, and has had good news from mutual friends and family members. He mentions that he has heard that his sister, Edward's mother, is not well. He concludes one note writing: '...But never write something about the German dogs, of course...' Finally, there are six school evaluations for Haas from 1935/35. A rare, fine content grouping.
