415. AUSTRIAN .69 CAL. CARBINE FOUND BENEATH A DEAD CONFEDERATE An exceptional Civil War relic, an Austrian .69 caliber carbine, 38 1/2" overall, no maker listed noted thereon, with rifled barrel and saddle ring. The wooden stock bears a ca. 1905 paper label bearing the printed inscription: "16-CARBINE Was found under the dead body of a Confederate soldier on the battlefield of Pittsburgh Landing [Shiloh] just after the battle, by James McLelland Henderson, then captain of the U.S. Transport. The carbine was given to George W. Foster by Wm. M. Henderson, son of Capt. Henderson, on May 13, 1901: was presented to the Post by Geo. W. Foster. Received for the Post by W. H. H. Lea.". The brass butt plate of the rifle also bears a cut-out G.A.R. symbol pasted thereupon. Following the closing of the post, the carbine was purchased by George Marinos, proprietor of the Battlefield Military Museum in Gettysburg, and was later sold to noted collector Daniel J. Earnshaw in 1988. The weapon was then obtained by noted Gettysburg arms and relics dealers The Horse Soldier, who have consigned it to us and whose reputation is unimpeachable.
