Description:

AUSTRIA-HUNGARY DRAFT BROADSIDE
Scarce Austro-Hungarian World War I draft broadside, 36 x 23 in., Holleschau, Sept. 28, 1915, printed in German and Czech, instructing all drafted militiamen who were approved for service with the Landsturm that were born in 1894 to report to their assigned headquarters for immediate enlistment on October 15, 1915. They are advised ...to bring with them a pair of sturdy shoes that fit into the field, woolen linen...cutlery and food containers as well as cleaning supplies...' The conclusion of each message bears a Holleschau ink stamp. Folds, a few small spots of non-intrusive staining, else very good. The Austro-Hungarian Landsturm was a reserve force of lesser-trained units, intended to provide replacements for the front lines and a militia for local defense. During the First World War, the Austrian Landsturm formed 40 regiments, totaling 136 battalions, and the Hungarian Landsturm formed 32 regiments, totaling 97 battalions.
