Description:

AUSCHWITZ PRISONER CORRESPONDENCE OF STANISLAW GLADYSZEK
Group of seven A.Ls.S. written in pencil by Polish prisoner at Auschwitz Stanislaw Gladyszek, each 3pp. 8vo., May 8, 1943 to July 18, 1944, each bearing "Konzentrationslager Auschwitz" printed on the face, "Auschwitz" printed as location within, instructions as to content permitted, and a partial Auschwitz postmark as postage stamps have been removed. Additionally, the sender has added the camp name in his return address. In Polish, untranslated, with censor's stamp. Overall very good, and should be translated. Stanislaw Gladyszek was born in Krakow in 1922 and in 1939 joined the underground where he lived in hiding for four years. Captured at the end of 1942, he was first imprisoned in Tarnow, and then deported with 1,700 other men to Auschwitz. He was then assigned to the reception of new prisoners for slave labor duties, being assigned to undressing, shaving heads, disinfecting, delousing, and tattooing. He later was involved in the construction of barracks at Birkenau, and in July, 1944 was sent to Dautmergen as labor in a factory converting oil shale to useable oil. Finally liberated by the French in March, 1945 he lived to testify against his jailers. This is the first such grouping from a single, identified writer we have ever encountered.
