Description:

ATTICA RIOT PARTICIPANTS'' MUGSHOTS
A 3-ring binder containing 65 previously uncirculated ''mugshot'' portraits of participants in the August 21, 1971 Attica Prison Rebellion, an event sparked by the death of Black rights activist George Jackson at San Quentin Prison in California. Jackson died at the hands of correctional guards a month earlier. About half of Attica Prison''s convicts rebelled and seized control of the grounds, taking 33 staff hostage. During negotiations, the Governor''s office agreed to 28 of the prisoners'' demands but would not agree to full amnesty for participants. When the uprising was over, 39 people were dead including 29 inmates, most of them shot by Police snipers. Within four years of the riot, 62 inmates had been charged in 42 indictments containing 1,289 separate counts. Families of inmates killed sued the State of New York and after 12 years in the Courts, the State agreed to pay $12 million to settle the case. The New York State Special Commission on Attica later wrote, ''With the exception of Indian massacres in the late 19th century, the State Police assault which ended the four-day prison uprising was the bloodiest one-day encounter between Americans since the Civil War.'' These 65 portraits whose subjects display expressions ranging from disgust to anger and defiance were compiled by the New York State Organized Crime Task Force during their investigation of the uprising. Condition: Excellent with some wear to the binder itself. Each portrait measures approximately 3''x5'' with some variations. Several appear to be captured with a Polaroid camera. Most bear hand notations in pen.
