ATOMIC BOMB IS DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA Excessively rare rag paper edition of The New York Times, Aug. 7, 1945, complete 38pp. folio edition. The triple-tiered headline, printed the day after Paul Tibbett's Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, reads: "FIRST ATOMIC BOMB DROPPED ON JAPAN; MISSILE IS EQUAL TO 20,000 TONS OF TNT; TRUMAN WARNS OF A 'RAIN OF RUIN'". Other headings read: "NEW AGE USHERED...HIROSHIMA IS TARGET...DAY OF ATOMIC ENERGY HAILED BY PRESIDENT, REVEALING WEAPON". The story offers virtually no description of the effects of the bomb, nor does it name Tibbets or his aircraft. It does, however, offer extensive coverage on the development of the weapon, texts of statements issued by Truman and Secretary of War Stimson, information on Manhattan Project leader Gen. Leslie Groves, Robert J. Oppenheimer, and others, and so on. Other news also includes a report on the death of top ace Richard Bong. Disbound, very fine condition. The special rag paper editions of The New York Times were printed on high quality, clean white rag stock with a run of only about one hundred copies, meant for preservation in select libraries. This is in contrast to the regular edition, printed on cheap, high-acid paper.
