Description:

'ASTERPERIOUS' 319TH BOMBARDMENT SQUADRON JACKET PATCH
Very rare war-date theater-made jacket patch depicting the emblem of the 319th Bombardment Squadron, a cartoonish native islander with white gloves (as depicted at the time) casually leaning against a large bomb. The embroidered wool patch measures 4 in. across and 4.75 in. from top to bottom. Fine condition, sold with a copy of a Jan. 20, 1945 letter from airman Cpl. Marshall V. Whited of the 319th B.G. on 90th Bomb Group 'Jolly Rogers' letterhead, which originally accompanied the patch. The 90th Heavy Bombardment Group of the 5th Army Air Force, was known as the 'Jolly Rogers' throughout the South West Pacific and was commanded by Lt. General George C. Kenney. The 319th Bombardment Squadron, 'Asterperious', is one of four bomb squadrons of the 90th Bombardment Group Heavy. The 319th made history in New Guinea from 1943-44 in many critical battle campaigns including Wewak, Biak Island, and Rabaul.
