ASHTRAY MADE OF DURALUMIN FROM THE R101 AIRSHIP CRASH
An ashtray constructed of duralumin recovered from the crash site of the British R101 airship, measuring 5 1/4 x 3 in., with two slotted indentations on each side with which to hold cigarettes, and the imprinted legend: 'METAL FROM R 101 / THOS W. WARD LTD.' The R101 hydrogen-filled airship crashed in October, 1930 while flying over Beauvais, France, killing a total of 48 people of the 54 on board. Thomas W. Ward was a scrap metal merchant and his company salvaged what they could from the wreck. Accompanied by the cover of the Oct. 6, 1930 issue of 'The Daily Express' discussing the R101 crash, titled 'AERIAL VIEW OF GREATEST AIR DISASTER', with the incredible wreckage shown. Very good condition.
