ASHTARTE TERRACOTTA PLAQUE
A terracotta votive plaque with Ashtarte, a fertility goddess, 4 1/2", from Syria ca. 2000 B.C. This Semitic goddess was worshipped by the Syrians, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Egyptians and others. King Solomon built a temple to her as "Astoreth", near Jerusalem. The Greeks transposed her into the Goddess of Love: Aphrodite. This votive plaque is in fine condition with no cracks or chipping, with a patina that is consistent throughout.
