JOHN ASHE (1720 - 1781) Revolutionary War brigadier general, destroyed the British garrison of Fort Johnson, recaptured British-held Augusta but routed in a surprise attack at Briar Creek, effectively ending Georgia's colonial resistance. Captured and died of smallpox in captivity. Excessively rare war-date D.S. as North Carolina Treasurer , 1p. oblong 8vo., North Carolina, May 10, 1777, a bill of exchange issued to James Payenneville in the amount of $125.00, directed to the Treasurer of the United States.
