JOHN ASHE (1720 - 1781) Revolutionary War brigadier general, destroyed the British garrison of Fort Johnson, recaptured British-held Augusta but routed in a surprise attack at Briar Creek, effectively ending Georgia's colonial resistance. Captured and died of smallpox in captivity. Excessively rare war-date D.S. as North Carolina Treasurer , 1p. oblong 8vo., North Carolina, May 10, 1777, a bill of exchange issued to James Payenneville in the amount of $125.00, directed to the Treasurer of the United States. Endorsements appear on verso, and show through slightly, the last endorsement made payable to Robert Morris! Overall very good. There appear no records for the sale of John Ashe in the past fifteen years. $800-1,200
