Description:

An incredible find, a document bearing the original signature of fifty German detainees at "Camp Ashcan", as well as original "mug shots" and group photographs. "Central Continental Prisoner of War Enclosure No. 32", code-named "ASHCAN", was an Allied prisoner-of-war camp in the Palace Hotel of Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg established immediately after the German surrender. Operating from May to August 1945, it served as a processing station and interrogation center for the 86 most prominent surviving Nazi leaders prior to their trials in Nuremberg. The luxury hotel was earlier used as a billet for U.S. troops, and was transformed into a high-security area with a fifteen-foot high electrified barbed wire fence, guard towers with machine guns and klieg lights. On July 6, 1945 Captain Hess (father of our consignor), attached to G-2 at SHAEF Headquarters, arrived at the camp to photograph the prisoners. As each was photographed, they signed a sheet with their name and prisoner serial number. The 4pp. 4to. document bears fifty names, in order of appearance: ARTHUR SEYSS-INQUART, ERNST VON FREYEND, WILHELM KEITEL, WALTER BUCH, WILHELM FRICK, DR. KARL STROELIN, ALBERT KESSELRING, HANS FRANK, KURT DALUEGE, OTTO MEISSNER, HERMANN GOERING, DR. KARL BRANDT, HERBERT BUECHS, LEOPOLD BUERKNER, ERICH DETHLEFFSEN, KARL DONITZ, ALFRED JODL, FRIEDRICH KRITZINGER, ROBERT LEY, WALTER LUEDDE-NEURATH, JAKOB NAGEL, HERMANN REINECKE, OTTO SALMAN, LUTZ SCHWERIN VON KROSIGK, FRANZ SELDTE, GERHARD WAGNER, PAULK WEGENER, WERNER ZSCHINTZSCH, ALFRED ROSENBERG, DR. HANS BORCHERS, WALTHER FUNK, HANS LAMMERS, FRANZ SCHWARZ, FRANZ XAVER SCHWARZ, WALTER WARLIMONT, JULIUS STREICHER, GEORG LINDEMANN, JOHANNES BLASKOWITZ, JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP, PRINZ PHILIPP VON HESSEN, FRANZ RITTER VON EPP, ERWIN KRAUS, ERNST WILHELM BOHLE, WILHELM STUCKART, RICHARD WALTER DARRE, MIKLOS HORTHY, FRANZ VON PAPEN, FRIEDRICH VON BOETTICHER and GUSTAV STEENGRACHT. The last page bears a small marginal tear, else fine. Also present are over one hundred 2 x 2.25 in "mug shots" of the prisoners showing almost all in front and side views with placards bearing their names, prisoner numbers, and the date of the image. Finally, there is included 15 original 8 x 10" photographs taken at about the same time: two show Hermann Goring at front center, with his fellow prisoners standing beside and behind him; two show von Papen and five other in standing poses; ten show the hotel, fortifications and guards, and one image shows the ASHCAN officers and some staff. Overall fine condition, and one of the best gathering of signatures of the Nazi hierarchy we have seen.
