Description:

Good group of thirteen documents and two photos related to the wartime service of Wehrmacht artilleryman Johannes Adler, includes: his "soldbuch", 34pp. 12mo., issued March 13, 1939 and featuring Adler's identity photo stapled inside the front cover and his signature on the second page. This page also indicates that he was a member of "1. Batterie Artillerie Regiment 24", although additional entries indicate that he spent much of the war, from November of 1942 to April of 1944, in various military hospitals. The spine is entirely split and the pages loose but all apparently present, with many tears and signs of wear to the edges. WITH: a partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Dresden, March 28, 1933, Adler's "Verpflichtungsschein" or military commitment certificate, completed when he joined the Reichswehr. Shows folds with splits repaired on the verso with cello tape, small chips to the edges and file holes to the left edge, else very good. WITH: a partly printed D.S. 1p. 4to., Chemnitz, March 20, 1937, an award certificate granting Adler the Wehrmacht Long Service Award, Fourth Class for four years of service in the Wehrmacht. The certificate is signed at the conclusion in black ink by the major-general commanding the 24th Division, WERNER KIENITZ (1885-1959). Shows folds and file holes at the left edge, else very good. WITH: partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Dec. 12, 1939, an award certificate granting Adler the Sudetenland Medal with Prague Device. Signed at the conclusion in black ink by the major commanding the regiment, with the stamped signature of the general commanding the IV Army Corps. Shows folds and file holes to the left edge, with chips to the bottom edge, else very good. WITH: partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Aug. 5, 1942, an award certificate granting Adler the Eastern Front Medal while he is recuperating in a military hospital, signed at the conclusion in black ink by a medical official. Shows folds and file holes to the left edge, else very good. WITH: partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Erfurt, March 25, 1945, a diploma indicating that Adler has completed a civil service course in business administration, likely extended to him after the wounds which landed him in the military hospital rendered him unfit for active service. Signed at the conclusion by two officials. The national eagle at top center has been "de-Nazified", with heavy folds and file holes to the left edge, else very good. Also present is Adler's DRL sports book and a related certificate, his wedding photo showing him in dress uniform, and an early photo showing his regiment in formation on a parade ground, all wearing transitional M1916-style helmets. Fifteen pieces.
