Description:

ARTIFACTS FROM WRECK OF SS GEORGIANA
Superb and unique Civil War relic, a round shot and accreted box of knives raised from the wreck of the SS Georgiana. The ball measures a full inch in diameter and may either be from the Georgiana's guns or one of the many shots which ultimately sunk her. The set of knives has melded into a single mass measuring 9" x 7". Despite the rusting and accretion, each individual handle is clearly visible. The SS Georgiana is one of the best known American Civil War shipwrecks. The vessel was an impressive steamer, outfitted with fourteen guns and made swift for privateering. The Georgiana met her doom on March 19, 1863 while trying to evade a Union blockading squadron posted at Charleston, South Carolina. The Georgiana's captain and crew, seeing how Union cannon fire had destroyed the rudder and hull, scuttled her and escaped. Pursuing Union troops set fire to the ship and sunk it. Famed diver and archeologist E.L. Spence discovered the Georgiana's remains in 1965. The vessel remains famous for the cargo that has been pulled from her, as well as for its connection to the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury, George Trenholm, who consigned her. The items are beautifully presented in a wooden box measuring 12" x 17" which has been lined with a bed of Charleston sea sand and rocks. Additionally present are other items dredged from the wreck, including pins, buttons, bottle and china shards, and other items. The lot includes a certificate of authenticity, tracing the provenance to divers of the crew Tantalus", who certify that the items, "were recovered from the positively identified wreckage of the SS Georgiana and the SS Mary Bowers", which struck the Georgiana the night of its sinking and now sits atop it.
