(1892 - 1984) 'Bomber Harris', British Air Marshall and head of the RAF Bomber Command in which capacity he oversaw the first 1,000-bomber raid. ‘THE HUN IMMEDIATELY SIDE-SLIPPED AND DIVED OUT OF CONTROL' Fine content partly-printed, World War I-date D.S. ‘A. T. Harris', 1p. legal folio, Ypres, Aug. 21, 1917. A ‘Combats in the air' report regarding Second Lt. E. L. Smith, an aerial victory of an Albatross Scout. In part: ‘…At 9:30 a.m. an Albatross Scout dived down on our tail. On reaching us he turned his nose and opened fire. Gunner Grenner opened fire immediately firing about a drum, tracers were seen to enter the fuselage. The hun immediately side-slipped and dived out of control. Although the Observer was hit he continued to fire on him till his drum was finished. This was confirmed by the 48th French Squadron at BERGUES, who witnessed the whole fight…'. Signed by Harris in pencil at conclusion. Evenly toned, very good.
