Description:

Arthur St. Clair 1734-1818 Revolutionary War major general serving at Trenton and Princeton, commanded Ft. Ticonderoga, President of the Continental Congress and first governor of the Northwest Territory. Fine content war date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Morris Town, Mar. 28, 1777 From Washington's headquarters he writes: ... There is a large Quantity of Cloathing coming on from the Eastward. The Bearer is sent up to General Clinton to desire that it may be sent on with a proper escort from New Windsor, where it will most probably be passed as it is thought unsafe that it should come thro'the Country betwixt you and his without one - but as it may possibly happen the Waggons may be come on before the Messenger can reach Fort Montgomery, in that case you will send a sufficient Guard with them to this place. Supplies were scarce early in the Revolution, and St. Clair clearly hopes to protect this much-needed clothing for his soldiers. Very good condition.
