Description:

ARTHUR LYON FREMANTLE
(1835-1901) British army officer best known for his travels through the Confederacy as an unofficial ‘war tourist', during which he made the acquaintances of numerous generals and other notable figures, and directly observed the Battle of Gettysburg. He later wrote a book describing his experience, titled ‘Three Months in the Southern States'. Scarce, fine association A.L.S., 2pp. 12mo., ‘Travellers Club' [London], March 7, 1867, to Confederate general and Secretary of War JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE (1821-1875). In full: ‘I hope you have today received an invitation for this Club – for a month. I think at the expiration of the month you will have no difficulty in getting the invitation renewed by application to the Committee. I see that the Hon'ble John Rose [Minister of Finance] of Canada is an honorary member here – very likely you may know him. You are probably aware that during the time you are an honorary member you can use the Club in every way the same as anyone else. If you like I shall be very happy to take you over the Club any time.' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. On the verso, Breckinridge has labeled the letter with his correspondent's name and the date received. Shows original mailing folds, with a pencil inscription identifying Breckinridge's notation, otherwise in fine condition overall. At the time this letter was written, Breckinridge and his family were in exile from the United States and traveling throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. He would not return to the U.S. until given amnesty by President Johnson in 1868.
