Description:

684. ARNOLD'S TREASON Partly-printed Connecticut Continental soldier's pay voucher, 1p. 12mo., Treasury Office [Hartford], June 1, 1782 issued to, in part: "The State of Connecticut doth owe unto Sharp[er] Rogers who hath served in the Connecticut [Line of the] Continental Army, the sum of Nine pounds four [shillings]...shall be paid to him...". Signed by JOHN LAURENCE as Treasurer and endorsed on the verso by "Sharper Roger" using his mark while docketing notes that Rogers was from Milford. Rogers enlisted on May 16, 1777 in Pond's company of the 6th Regiment of the Connecticut Line. That unit served under Gen. Israel Putnam on his expedition against Fort Montgomery in late 1777, served under Washington at White Plains the following year, was engaged in the storming of Stony Point, N. Y. on July 15, 1779 and was ordered to defend West Point after Arnold's treason was uncovered. Usual punch hole cancellation with negligible tape repair affecting the verso, else very good. $75-100
