ARNOLD ROTHSTEIN
(1882 - 1928) "The Brain", a Jewish-American racketeer, businessman and gambler who became a kingpin of the Jewish mob in New York. Rothstein was widely reputed to have organized corruption in professional athletics, including conspiring to fix the 1919 World Series. He was gunned down for refusing to pay a large poker debt. Excessively rare typed D.S. "Arnold Rothstein", 7pp. 4to., New York, Oct. 28, 1921. Acting as president of "A. L. Libman, Inc.", Rothstein executes an employment agreement with Mr. A. L. Libman, securing the man''s employment with their joint property insurance firm for the sum of $12,000 per year. Additional clauses contemplate the issuance of stock, incapacitation of principals, liquidation, etc. Boldly signed by Rothstein and Libman at conclusion, and notarized on the following page. Fine. With copy of Beckett LOA A86053. The joint Libman/Rothstein venture was a succesful one, offering insurance throughout the New York market. Libman previously knew Rothman, having helped the criminal purchase real estate for the past five or more years.
