Description:

ARMY SPECIAL FORCES BATTLE MAPS OF HUE AND DANANG (5)
Exceptional lot of four Vietnam War items obtained from a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran of that conflict including three battle maps and two pieces of insignia. One map, 17.5 x 12 in., is headed 'HUE' and 'EDITION 1-AMS', and was cut down from a larger original. The topographical map is broken down into a numbered grid, showing Hue and the Perfume River near center. A very small blackened box in central Hue is indicated in handwriting at top as being the location of 'Lt. Wells + Rangers', with another note showing another box being the location of 'Friendly Forces', about five or six blocks away. Another note reads: 'x -> on call targets (H+I numbered)'. The second map, 12.75 x 12 in., is again a topographical map showing the Han River and points south, just south of Danang. This map two is broken down into a grid with the sections labeled with Roman numerals. Handwritten notes include: '1st contact' with the village of Viem Don circled, 'M[G?] Nest', and 'Have worked in old sections now'. There are also five five-digit numbers with code words" STATE SPORT CITY BEER SODA' inked beside them. On the verso of this map is a third map, an aerial photograph of roughly the same region, again marked-up with one note reading: '1st night', the other notes indistinct. All of the maps are covered in plastic on both sides, probably loosely laminated, in order to keep rain from damaging the maps and to allow notes made on the maps to be easily erased. The maps have been folded to pocket size and were obviously carried in the field. WITH: a period photocopy of drawings of various arrangements of troops in platoon and squad formations, 2pp. 4to. WITH: two pieces of cloth insignia, presumably from the owner of the foregoing, namely a Special Forces shoulder patch, 3 x 1.5 in. embroidered, and a 'U.S. ARMY' uniform-removed breast patch. A great lot, likely from the 1968 Tet Offensive.
