Description:

Fine and important group of items from the estate of American Army officer E. O. Nigel Cholmeley-Jones, a staff officer with the A.E.F. American Seventh Division in France in 1918. Included is a historic typed copy (carbon) of the "SALIENT POINTS OF ARMISTICE" as prepared in triplicate at the headquarters of the Seventh Division. The document, 3pp. legal folio, is dated Nov. 12, 1918 and sets forth the points agreed to the day before by the opposing parties in the war. It is signed in type by Lt. Col. H. A. Parker, on behalf of Major Gen. Edmund Wittenmyer. There are attached two additional pages dated Nov. 11, 1918 prepared at 8:00 AM, three hours after the armistice was signed and three hours before it took effect. Signed in type by German armistice signatory Matthias Erzberger, it sets forth several dozen changes and additions to the original terms of the agreement, including giving the Allies "the right of requisition", allowing access by the Allies through Danzig and Vistula corridors to provide food to the starving masses in the east, removal of German forces from East Africa, surrender of all submarines, and much more. A Cholmeley-Jones letter to the Stars and Stripes correspondent and artist ED VEBELL, recipient of this document and the other possessions offered here, is included. The 1972 letter states that the document is an "original copy...you should keep these as I have others of the same. The papers were in triplicate...". A note by Vebell, included, states that it Cholmeley-Jones who was sent to German headquarters with the original armistice conditions. Also present is a pair of Bausch and Lomb binoculars, 4 1/2" long with leather-covered barrels, marked: "SIGNAL CORPS U.S. ARMY" and bearing a (split) strap with Cholmeley-Jones' name inked on it, with original case with inlaid compass.
