Description:

(1747 - 1793) French general who commanded his own multi-national legion of troops under Rochambeau at Yorktown. He would later command the Republican Army during the French Revolution only to take his turn at the guillotine in 1793. Very rare, good content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., London, July 4, 1773 (coincidentally), very likely to prominent English banker Thomas Walpole (1727-1803), in French very politely requesting a very large loan of money. He begs in part: '...To as anyone a favor concerning money is always difficult, especially when one has had so little opportunity to get to know the person one is approaching. It is rare to find oneself forced to borrow without first having made the mistake of spending too much. I owe money and must repay it, several people here owe money to me (more than I owe) - and they will return it to me when they can...It is only on hard and often dishonest terms that a foreigner can find money within a few days...If, without inconvenience to yourself, you could loan me one hundred thousand pounds...' He then goes on to offer a plan of repayment in installments of £20,000 every six months -- an enormous sum of money for this period. Usual folds, blank second page mounted to a piece of card stock, otherwise fine condition. With full translation.
