ARLEIGH BURKE
(1901 - 1996) "31 Knot Burke" American admiral whose destroyers attacked Japanese naval forces with great effectiveness, commander of Fast Carrier Task Force 58 and participated in all the force's naval engagements until June 1945. Fine pair of items, includes a T.L.S. on his letterhead, 1p. 4to., Bethesda, Dec. 1, 1977. Burke mentions that he has been forced to do his own typing, adding: "I now have more sympathy for yeomen than before". Then then explains the origin of his nickname: "In the Solomons campaign in World War II Admiral Halsey dubbed me '31 Knot' Burke. In battle that is a good speed to operate...". Sold with an S.P. 5" x 7" b/w, shows Burke in uniform. Signed in a dark area but contrast remains quite good. Two pieces, fine.
