Description:

ARCHIVE OF THE MORAVIAN CHURCH IN BETHLEHEM AND NAZARETH IN PENNSYLVANIA (30+)
A large collection of many dozens of pieces of correspondence and documents from the Moravian communities of Nazareth and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania from 1806 to 1807. The Moravians came from Germany and preached to their brethren, which included other German immigrants as well as Native Americans and African Americans. The communities in Pennsylvania, particularly in Bethlehem and Nazareth, flourished. In Bethlehem, a historic district is present which preserves the history of the early Moravian settlers, with original buildings from the mid-18th century. The documents, largely letters in Sutterlin German, seemingly cover a very wide range of topics. The Moravian Church teaches the necessity of the New Birth, piety, evangelism, and doing good works. As such, the Moravian Brethren hold strongly that Christianity is a religion of the heart. For Moravians, ‘Christ lived as a man because he wanted to provide a blueprint for future generations' and ‘a converted person could attempt to live in his image and daily become more like Jesus'. Very good.
