Description:

ARCHIBALD COX
(1912 - 2004) American lawyer, served as U.S. Solicitor General under President John F. Kennedy and the first special prosecutor for the Watergate scandal. Sacked by Nixon for refusing to "toe the line". Fine content A.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Brookville, Oct. 15, 2001 to a school teacher. In part: "...You ask for a word about the Watergate affair. My duty was to investigate whether President Nixon...had committed criminal offenses while in office...we obtained a subpoena...directing President Nixon to produce for the grand jury the so-called Watergate tapes. He refused to comply and directed me not to seek evidence from the White House. This led to the Watergate crisis...even the highest officials must be subject to law. Because President Nixon was violating that constitutional principle, I refused to follow his instructions...Then he fired me. Happily the people rose up...forced him to comply with the subpoena. This - I think - is the historic significance of Watergate: the American people reaffirmed the principle that even the highest official must obey the law...". Fine.
