Description:

ARCHIBALD COX
(1912 - 2004) American lawyer and law professor who served as U.S. Solicitor General under President John F. Kennedy and as a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal. Cox refused a direct order from the White House to seek no further tapes or presidential materials, and Nixon fired him in an incident that became known as the Saturday Night Massacre. Cox's firing produced a public relations disaster for Nixon. T.L.S. 2pp. 4to., on Harvard Law School letterhead, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dec. 23, 1993, replying to questions about the Watergate scandal. In part: ‘...I believe that it is a fact the President Nixon kept what came to be called an ‘enemies list'. My name was not on the list...my wife's name – did appear on the list...the ‘Phyllis Cox' to whom the list referred was the wife of the distinguished painter, Gardner Cox...The men who broke into the offices of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate office and apartment house building were known as ‘the plumbers' because the White House employed them to stop leaks, i.e., to find out by taping telephone lines who was feeding information to the press which President Nixon did not wish to be released...some students listened to me more carefully after Watergate; otherwise I suppose that Watergate had no direct affect upon my career...I am not familiar with any evidence that the former Vice President Spiro Agnew had any involvement in any of the incidents which have come to be described as ‘the Watergate affair.'. Boldly signed at the conclusion. Fine.
