Description:

ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND
(1863-1914) Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia. Assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, his death was the spark igniting World War I. Very rare original photograph 6.5 x 9 in. sepia, matted, showing Ferdinand with his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, and their three children in a portrait taken outside. Together with: two original sepia photographs, 4 x 6 in. sepia, matted, formal portraits of Ferdinand and Sophie individually by Atelier Aurora, Vienna; an original photograph of Ferdinand standing in a snowy landscape, 4.5 x 6 in. sepia, matted; and six real-photo postcards of Ferdinand, his family, and palace, sent to to various recipients in 1913. Finally, the lot includes a copy of the June 28, 1964 British Sunday Times magazine, featuring an article regarding the Archduke's assassination. Photos bear foxing and wear to mats, overall very good.
