Description:

Interesting partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Dec. 23, 1863, addressed to First Lieutenant Thomas Scantleburg, in part: "...You are hereby informed that the President of the United States has appointed you First Lieutenant in the Second Regiment Missouri Volunteers of African Descent in the service of the United States..." The form goes on to request that Scantleburg communicate his acceptance to the Adjutant General's office of the War Department, along with an enclosed service oath (not present). He is commanded to report to Colonel William A. Pile at St. Louis for orders. The document is signed at the conclusion by Adjutant General of the Army LORENZO THOMAS (1804-1875) in black ink. Docketed on the verso, shows original folds, else very good. The Second Regiment Missouri Volunteers of African Descent, officially titled the 2nd Missouri Regiment of Colored Infantry, was established on December 14, 1863 at Benton Barracks in St. Louis, where more than one hundred men of the regiment died of disease, malnutrition and exposure. The regiment was attached to the 1st Division of United States Colored Troops at the District of Morganza in Louisiana, and was redesignated the 65th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops on March 11, 1864. Postwar, this regiment along with the 62nd Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops, raised funds to establish the Lincoln Institute (now Lincoln University) in St. Louis.
