Description:

APOLLO 11 "KAPTON" FOIL
A fine relic from the historic first flight to the moon, a 1/8" square piece of "Kapton" foil covering on the spacecraft Columbia to protect her from the extreme environment of deep space. The foil, which is gold-tone on the front and silver-tone on the back, played a critical role in the success of the flight by reflecting the sun's intense heat off the ship. Due to the fragility of the foil, much of it burned off during the 25,000 mph re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, but a small portion survived, from which this example was taken. Presented in plastic affixed to a boldly-signed superb content printed letter signed by astronaut BUZZ ALDRIN, lunar model pilot for the flight, which explains the use and provenance of the relic. Fine condition.
