Description:

ANZIO CAMPAIGN BATTLE OF CISTERNA RELIC U.S. M1 HELMET
Relic-condition early World War II U.S. front seam-fixed bale M1 helmet shell, oxidized inside and out and with the exterior sanded and repainted for preservation, showing a large (approx. 6.5 x 4 in.) dent and related cracks to the left-hand side of the dome. The exterior below the dent bears a typed label in Italian: ‘Elmetto Americano M1 (2) Zona Cisterna (Latina) Cori Operarono 1-2-3 Ranger U.S. Attacati Dalda Herman Goring Subirono Gravissime Perdite. Sbarco Anzio 1944' (‘American M1 Helmet (2) Cisterna Area (Latina) Sector Opertion of 1-2-3 U.S. Rangers Attacked by Herman Goring [Division, sic] Suffered Very Heavy Losses. Anzio Landing 1944'. This places the discovery of the helmet at Cisterna, the site of a major U.S. defeat which saw U.S. Army Rangers attempt a night infiltration of what was believed to be a lightly-defended outpost, but instead engaged a large force of German infantry and armor. In addition to the aforementioned condition notes, the right-hand strap bale is broken off, and the heat stamp is illegible due to oxidation.
