Description:

ANTIQUE SILVER BOWL GIVEN TO A GERMAN OFFICER, 4TH QUEEN AUGUSTA GUARDS GRENADIER REGIMENT
Large heavily silver-plated presentation covered serving bowl with lid presented to a German captain. The bowl measures 16 1/2" wide at its widest point and about 10" tall. Its lid bears a large knob at top with a fine engraved rendering of the emblem of the 4th (Queen Augusta) Guards Grenadier Regiment (Königin Augusta Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 4). The edge of the lid is furtehr pesonalized to the recipient: "Hauptmann von Hinckeldey vom 17.12.96 bis 16.12.99". The body of the bowl bears an engraving of the same shield as the lid. Numbered and hallmarked by noted French silversmiths Christofle on bottom. A few scattered tiny dings, else very good. This guards regiment was an infantry regiment of the Royal Prussian Army established in 1860 in Koblenz and until 1893 it was the only one of the Prussian Guards outside the region around Berlin. The regiment was named after Queen Augusta in 1890, to commemorate her death. The Guards moved to Spandau in 1893 and in 1897 to Moabit. Its last commander was Walter Freiherr von Schleinitz (1872-1950) in summer, 1918.
