Description:

ANTIQUE MALAYSIAN MATCHLOCK LONG GUN
Unusual Malaysian matchlock long gun, 57" octagonal barrel, 67 1/2" overall, approx. .75 caliber, likely manufactured in the early nineteenth century. The dark wood stock runs the entire length of the weapon to the muzzle, where it is capped with an oxidized metal band. The butt ends in a truncated club shape, dissimilar to European arms of the same era, and reminiscent of Japanese matchlock weapons. It is decorated with a sheet of metal with a hammered floral pattern. The lock, lockplate, trigger, and trigger guard are all very ornately executed in brass with floral and geometric embellishments. The trigger and hammer resemble stepped temples in shape, and the ends of the lockplate and trigger guard are executed in a "palmette" motif. The barrel is marked at the top of the breech end with a flower blossom symbol. The barrel is affixed to the stock by a single copper band, and shows dark patina and some surface corrosion, else very good. Rare.
