ANTIETAM MUSTER ROLL OF THE 5TH MARYLAND VOLS.
Fine content war-date D.S., 2pp. 30.75 x 21 in., [Oct. 31, 1862], the 'Muster Roll of Captain Samuel Ford Company A, 5th Regiment of Maryland Vols, Army of the United States (Captain Wm. Louis Schley) from the First Day of September 1962, when last mustered to the Thirty First Day of October 1862' with the names of some 68 solders - many with comments: 'Wounded in battle of Antietam Sept. 17, 1862...Detailed as Waggoner...Sick in Hospital at Bolivar, Va...Missing since the Battle of Antietam Sept. 17, 1862 Returned October 28th 1862...Killed in the Battle of Antietam... Deserted whilst camped on Bolivar Heights Va Sept 27, 1862...', etc., signed by Capt. Samuel Ford and Col. William Lous Schley. Schley formed the regiment in August, 1861 and would serve as its commander until his resignation in October, 1864 after being relieved of duty under suspicion of collaboration days earlier. Three of the regiment's commanders were wounded at Antietam, the last fighting on despite his wound. The regiment advanced to the knoll above the Bloody Lane, losing 43 killed, 123 wounded. Most of the regiment would be captured at the Second Battle of Winchester in the rout of Milroy's force at Stephenson Depot. It would be reorganized and fight at the Crater and at Petersburg and Appomattox.
