Pair of rare anti-slavery imprints, both disbound yet still stitched to each other. Includes: 'American Chattelized Humanity, and Its Supports. By Jonathan Walker, late of Florida, where he was put in the Pillory, fined, branded with Hot Irons, imprisoned eleven months, &c. &c., by the Government of the United States, for an attempted act of Humanity' by Jonathan Walker (Boston: self-published), 1847. 36pp. 8vo. Jonathan Walker (1799–1878) became famous for the unusual punishment he endured for helping seven runaway slaves escape to the Bahamas in 1844. He was arrested and convicted of stealing slaves; one of the punishments inflicted upon him was the branding of his right hand with the letters 'SS' -- denoting ‘slave stealer.' Upon release from prison in 1845, Walker returned to New England where he lectured extensively on the immoralities of slavery. Known as 'The Man With the Branded Hand,' his story and the image of his hand were much publicized by the abolitionist press. This pamphlet was published two years after his release. Walker outlines the history and current situation of slaves, and explains the processes and powers by which they are kept enslaved, and details how slaves are treated under the laws and slave codes in the deep South. Diminishing damp stains from the title page, on, else very good. WITH: 'Eighteen Months in Louisiana, or Criticisms on Slavery' by Anson Wolcott (Lockport, N.Y.: N. Leonard) 1843. 36pp. 12mo., first pages soiled with some damp staining. A firsthand account of life on a large Louisiana plantation, describing the mistreatment of slaves, brutal working conditions, whippings, etc. Two pieces.
