Description:

ANTI-SEMITIC GERMAN FORGERIES OF BRITISH STAMPS
A rare set of 10 German propaganda forgeries of British stamps created in 1944, each example mounted to a sheet next to the original, authentic stamp on which it was based. As the Third Reich began to unravel and the tide of war was turning against Germany, Hitler re-created British stamps with anti-Semitic propaganda messages. The publication of these stamps was apparently carried out at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp by inmates with experience in offset printing, and using designs from George V issues. The 'British' stamps promoted anti-Semitism, with each skillfully-created forgery adding a subtle Star of David above George V's crown and a hammer and sickle in place of the D in the price. At first glance they seem very close to the real thing but for differences in the size of the perforation margins and slight washing-out of the colors. The collection herein includes six 'London Special Stamp No. 6', as well as three from the West Indies: Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica, which have an overprint reading 'Liquidation of Empire'. The stamps overprinted such were made to imply that the British Empire was being 'liquidated' by Japanese occupation in the far East, and also by land-lease arrangements with the USA in the West Indies. There is some speculation about how these stamps were distributed, with theories ranging from sending the sheets to neutral countries such as Switzerland and Sweden, to their being dropped over Allied troops following Normandy. Needless to say, the purpose of these un-gummed stamps was propagandistic rather than postal fraud! Very attractively presented with information about the stamps, in very good condition.
