Description:

ANTI-POLK BROADSIDE
Extremely rare printed broadside, a circular, 1p. legal folio, [n.p. prob. Maryland, n.d., ca. 1848] published by the Whig Central Committee, attacking " "...wild measures of PRESIDENT POLK and his 'DRILLED CONGRESS' -- Will you or will you not hold him and his party responsible to you for the bitter fruits of his first eighteen months administration of your government? -- For the repeal of the tariff of 1842, under which, from its passage to its repeal, all the great interest of the country have prospered and flourished? - For the odious and repudiated sub-treasury bill, by which a depreciated currency will inevitably be entailed upon you, whilst the office holders will be provided with a different, more equal and stable one?-- For the unnatural and unnecessary war in which your government is not involved with Mexico, at the cost of at least ONE HUNDRED MILLIONS of DOLLARS, to be supplied by you and your fellow-citizens? By the last Congress FIFTY ONE AND A HALF MILLIONS were appropriated from the Treasury at the instance and request of President Polk, from twenty to thirty millions of which were required for this war-- whilst every cent that is expected from the receipts into the treasury will not reach twenty -five millions...". The Democrats, with Lewis Cass on the ticket, lost the election of 1848 to the Whig (and Mexican War hero), Zachary Taylor. Extremely rare, OCLC records no extant editions of this circular. Weakened folds repaired on verso with archival tissue, professionally deacidified, light toning, else very good condition.
