Description:

ANTI-MARTIN VAN BUREN ELECTION BROADSIDE
A suburb illustrated broadside entitled "THIS IS THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT.", 1p. folio, (New York: John Childs, 1840), a pro-Whig cartoon sharply lampooning the Jackson and Van Buren administrations as corrupt and autocratic, and taking particular aim at the Sub-Treasury system devised to replace the Bank of the United States. The sub-treasury is represented at the top by a banking house interior whose floor rests on "Constitutional Currency," and whose cellar stocked with empty boxes. The scene appears in a cloud of smoke, which comes from the pipes of Andrew Jackson and advisor and publicist Amos Kendall. Kendall's pipe also blows bubbles, symbolizing vanity or idle schemes. The cartoon relates nine verses of the familiar nursery rhyme poking fun at Levi Woodbury, Thomas Hart Benton, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, and of course, the incumbent, Martin Van Buren. All is saved by the rooster in the final panel: William Henry Harrison. A great piece of political art. Americana. Division, no. 155; Murell, p. 141; Weitenkampf, p. 62-63. Folds, some losses to corners and margins, light foxing, else very good.
