Description:

(1750-1803) Brigadier general in the Continental Army, aide de camp to George Washington, known for his leadership of cavalry. War date A.L.S. 'Anth. W. White', 1p. 4to., Savannah, July 18th, 1782, letter to John Martin (1730-1786) Governor of Georgia. In full: 'Being under the necessity of attending to some business of my own regt. I must request you will be so obliging as to put Mr. William Houston's name in the list instead of my own. I am in great hopes to procure Mr. Wright...when the matter we had some conversation, shall be attended to on my part...' Some tears along folds have been repaired on the verso, scattered stains. William Houston (1755-1813) was a delegate to the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention for Georgia. Houston was not elected to the Continental Congress until 1783, so it is possible the 'list' White is referencing in the letter is names of those intended to represent the State of Georgia in White's place.
