Description:

ANTHONY WAYNE
(1745 - 1796) "Mad Anthony", American Revolutionary brigadier general who distinguished himself at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and in the brilliant capture of the British garrison at Stony Point. Partly-printed D.S. with an interesting Judaic connection, 1p. oblong 4to., Savannah, June 9, 1785, a bill of exchange for 2500 florins made payable to "Mr Philip Jacob Cohen" and directed to "Messrs Wilhelm & Jan Willink Mirchts [sic] Amsterdam". Philip Jacob Cohen was a resident of Savannah and a member of that city's Committee of Safety during the American Revolution. The Willinks were prominent Dutch merchants who invested in land in western Pennsylvania and upstate New York, much of it brokered by Robert Morris before he went bankrupt when the American land market crashed in the late 1790s (sound familiar?). Wayne's signature crossed through. Usual folds, loss at top left corners, else very good.
